A father in Offaly, Ireland, has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for raping and threatening to harm his daughter, who courageously spoke out about the abuse. The man, aged 51, was convicted of multiple counts of rape and oral rape against his daughter between 2012 and 2020. The victim, now 19 years old, testified in court about the physical and sexual abuse she endured from the age of five to 13.
The abuse began after the parents’ separation when the girl visited her father on weekends. The daughter recounted how the initial assault took place at the father’s home, where he compared her to her mother before committing the heinous acts. The abuse included physical violence, with the man slapping her during the assaults, which occurred repeatedly.
The victim eventually mustered the courage to disclose the abuse, leading to the father threatening to harm her younger sister and the family if she spoke out. Despite the threats, the abuse continued, causing immense pain and trauma to the young girl. She kept the abuse secret for years, suffering in silence until confiding in a friend and later her mother.
The father was not arrested until 2023, denying any wrongdoing throughout the process. In her impact statement, the victim expressed how the abuse consumed a significant part of her life, leading to suicidal thoughts. She highlighted her motivation to protect her family by keeping the abuse hidden, fearing the repercussions of speaking out.
Despite the trauma inflicted by her father, the victim emphasized her resilience and determination to retain her kind and loving nature. She lamented the betrayal by the one who should have cared for her the most but affirmed her strength in overcoming the abuse. The court sentenced the father to 12 years in prison, with restrictions upon his release, including supervision by Ireland’s Probation Service and a prohibition from contacting his daughters or their mother.
