A spill of fire retardant has occurred on the northbound lanes of Route 11 between Jacquet River and Charlo, as confirmed by the provincial government. The spill, which amounts to between 50 and 100 liters of fire retardant over several kilometers, has now dried, according to an update posted on Facebook by the province on Thursday around noon. Authorities have reassured the public that the spill is not considered harmful to humans or the environment.
The spill, consisting of a fire retardant solution primarily composed of ammonium polyphosphate, a phosphate salt also used as a fertilizer, is typically used to impede the spread of fires. The provincial update mentioned that the spill has resulted in a conspicuous “brightly colored solution” along the affected area.
The Department of Natural Resources contractor is being held accountable for the spill, which was initially reported by the province on Wednesday at approximately 8 p.m. Individuals are advised to be cautious of personnel present at the spill site.
