“From Restrictions to Freedom: Iranian Woman Finds Joy in Canadian Running Community”

Published:

Ladan Jahankha finds immense fulfillment in being part of her local running community, as it represents the realization of a long-held aspiration. Having previously resided in Iran, where significant restrictions exist on women’s involvement in sports, Jahankha expresses gratitude for the newfound freedom she experiences in St. John’s since relocating in 2022.

In Iran, female athletes are subject to stringent dress codes for public sports events, and government regulations often hinder women from engaging in various athletic activities, as highlighted by the Center for Human Rights in Iran. Recent reports by the BBC underscore the challenges faced by women in Iran, with instances of marathon organizers facing legal repercussions for allowing participants not adhering to hijab requirements.

Jahankha shared with CBC News her thwarted attempts to pursue running during her time in Tehran, citing the unfavorable circumstances that prevented her from fulfilling her athletic ambitions. However, her move to St. John’s reignited her interest in running after connecting with a colleague who shared her passion for the sport. Through social media, she joined a running group, where she found support from a coach and fellow beginners, describing the community as exceptionally welcoming.

Despite ongoing tensions stemming from the U.S.-Iran conflict, Jahankha views running as a means to alleviate stress and anxiety. She emphasizes the personal significance of running, integrating it into her daily routine even on days when group sessions are not feasible. Jahankha’s participation in recent events, including a Pride race alongside her family, reflects her enthusiasm for running, with plans to partake in another 5-kilometer race in the near future.

Expressing gratitude to Canada for the opportunities it offers, Jahankha acknowledges the limitations and restrictions prevalent in her home country, emphasizing the sense of freedom and joy she experiences living in Canada. Running has become an integral part of her life, symbolizing empowerment and liberation in a new environment.
