The Gaza ceasefire, eagerly anticipated, has collapsed as the Israeli Prime Minister directed significant military strikes on the Palestinian enclave. This action came in response to Hamas allegedly breaching the peace agreement, with Israel countering by accusing Hamas of 125 ceasefire violations.
Israel reported that a coffin handed over by Hamas did not contain the expected remains of a deceased hostage. This development marked the end of the two-week ceasefire, leading to a surge in violence and the issuance of large-scale strike orders.
According to officials in Gaza, since the ceasefire commenced on October 10, Israel has been responsible for the deaths of 94 Palestinians in the Strip. Hamas, in a statement on Tuesday, accused Israel of attempting to create false justifications to justify further aggressive actions in Gaza.
Hamas claimed that Israel is impeding efforts to locate bodies in the Strip and called for mediators to facilitate humanitarian tasks without political interference. Palestinians in Gaza are now on edge, anticipating renewed Israeli attacks.
Earlier on Tuesday, reports emerged of intense gunfire and explosions in Rafah, southern Gaza. Israel alleged that Hamas misidentified the remains of a recently returned captive, which actually belonged to an abductee whose body was recovered two years ago.
The ongoing conflict between Israel and Gaza has resulted in the deaths of at least 68,527 individuals and the injury of 170,395 since October 2023. Furthermore, during the Hamas-led attacks on October 7, 2023, 1,200 people perished in Israel, and around 200 were taken captive.
The October 7 attacks triggered multiple fronts for Israel, including conflicts with Lebanese Hezbollah, Yemeni Houthis, pro-Iran Iraqi militia, and Syrian factions. Additionally, this led to US-Israeli strikes on Iran earlier this year, targeting Tehran’s nuclear facilities.
The forces opposing Israel, backed by Iran, have suffered significant losses and may take years to recover their former strength. The Iranian regime’s supporters have also been weakened by years of conflict with Israel, resulting in substantial damage to Hamas in Gaza.
Critics have accused Netanyahu of provocation aimed at undermining the ceasefire agreement. Muhammad Shehada, an analyst with the European Council on Foreign Relations, stated that Netanyahu has been actively seeking ways to resume hostilities in Gaza despite the ceasefire being in place.
Both sides have accused each other of violating the ceasefire agreement, necessitating significant diplomatic efforts to mend the peace deal. It is reported that US President Donald Trump is closely monitoring the extent of Israeli military actions against Gaza.
