Halfords has declared that it will shut down all its outlets on Boxing Day and New Year’s Day this year. The automotive retailer aims to provide its staff nationwide with a well-deserved break to enjoy time with family and friends. While Halfords stores will be closed on Christmas Day as well, they will maintain regular operations on all other days during the festive period.
Henry Birch, the CEO of Halfords, expressed gratitude towards the staff for their hard work throughout the year, emphasizing the importance of allowing them to unwind and bond with loved ones. Birch highlighted the decision to close stores on Boxing Day and New Year’s Day as a gesture of appreciation and to ensure that teams return rejuvenated for the upcoming year.
Following a notable increase in sales and profits in the past six months, Halfords reported a 9% growth in cycling business sales and a 3.3% rise in total revenues to £893.3 million. Additionally, the motoring and autocentres divisions experienced like-for-like revenue growth of 1.1% and 4.3%, respectively.
In line with Halfords’ move, Home Bargains has also confirmed the closure of its stores on Boxing Day and New Year’s Day, a practice it has maintained in recent years. Similarly, Aldi is set to keep its doors shut on December 26 and New Year’s Day, providing extended hours leading up to Christmas for customers’ convenience.
Rebecca Heley, the Communications Director at Aldi UK, emphasized the significance of allowing colleagues to unwind and enjoy the festive season with their families. She stated that closing Aldi stores on Boxing Day is a token of appreciation for the hard work put in by the staff to deliver a memorable Christmas experience for customers.
This decision aligns with a trend where various retailers opt to close on these public holidays to prioritize the well-being and relaxation of their employees.
