Shabana Mahmood will caution that the lack of control over borders is undermining public trust in politicians and the legitimacy of the state. The Home Secretary will urge for a coordinated international effort to combat illegal migration, as she convenes with European counterparts to address criminal organizations exploiting the Western Balkans for human and drug trafficking.
According to the Home Office, nearly 22,000 individuals were trafficked through routes in the region in 2024, enriching criminal groups and endangering lives. Ms. Mahmood is anticipated to meet with ministers from various European countries, including Albania, Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, Bosnia, Serbia, France, Greece, and Italy.
She will emphasize the public’s expectation for governments to regulate entry and exit from their countries, highlighting the current challenges faced in this regard. The Home Secretary stressed that disorder at borders not only undermines political leadership but also damages the state’s credibility.
Recently, a new legislation was introduced in Parliament mandating that migrants must attain an A-level standard in English to work in the UK. Applicants through specific legal channels must demonstrate proficiency in speaking, listening, reading, and writing, verified through a Secure English Language Test conducted by an approved Home Office provider.
This measure is part of Labour’s Immigration White Paper, which includes reducing the post-study work visa duration for international students from two years to 18 months. These changes are scheduled to take effect from January 2027. Additionally, the Immigration Skills Charge (ISC) is set to increase to £480 per person per year for small or charitable organizations and £1,320 for medium and large organizations, with the proceeds reinvested in local workforce training.
Addressing the new regulations, Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood emphasized the importance of migrants integrating into society by learning the language and contributing positively. She stated that while the UK welcomes contributions from migrants, it is essential that they actively participate and adhere to societal norms.
