A horse named Blowers made history in British horse racing by winning at the longest odds ever recorded. Blowers, a five-year-old gelding trained by former Grand National-winning jockey Nigel Hawke, had little prior success in races.
Having previously performed poorly in a point-to-point Flat race and being pulled up in his hurdles debut, Blowers defied the odds at 300-1 in a maiden hurdle at Exeter. Despite his underdog status, ridden by James Best, Blowers triumphed over the favorite, On The Bayou, by three quarters of a length.
Race commentator Mike Cattermole exclaimed, “Blowers and James Best have caused a major upset with this win!”
Blowers surpassed a record held since 1990 in Britain by winning at odds of 300-1. The victory marks a significant achievement, as there have only been two other instances of such high-priced winners in Ireland.
Bookmaker Coral received 82 bets on Blowers, with the largest bet being a £2 each-way single. Coral’s John Hill commented, “Christmas came early for the 82 punters who backed Blowers at 300-1 odds. They clearly saw potential in the horse that we didn’t.”
Nigel Hawke expressed his satisfaction with Blowers’ performance, highlighting the horse’s raw talent and the challenge of controlling him during races. Hawke credited James Best for a superb ride and emphasized Blowers’ potential as a talented horse if properly managed.
The stewards investigated Blowers’ unexpected improvement in form, with Hawke attributing it to better settling and a strategic change in riding tactics. Hawke’s explanation was accepted by the stewards.
