Jakob Ingebrigtsen marked his return from injury with an impressive performance, securing his fourth consecutive 5,000-meter title at the European championships held in Birmingham, England. The Norwegian athlete, a two-time Olympic champion, had been sidelined due to surgery earlier this year to address issues with scar tissue around his left Achilles tendon.
In a thrilling finish, Ingebrigtsen surged in the final stretch, overtaking Florian Bremm of Germany in the last 50 meters to clinch victory with a time of 13 minutes and 15.29 seconds. Bremm finished in second place, with France’s Etienne Daguinos following in third.
Expressing his elation, Ingebrigtsen stated, “Coming back from adversity to reclaim the European title is immensely meaningful to me. I had doubts about my performance until the final 600 meters, but I regained my confidence and pushed through.” His competitors praised his remarkable skill, with Daguinos hailing him as “a legend of our sport” and Bremm acknowledging Ingebrigtsen’s superior speed even after his injury setback.
Despite his triumph in the 5,000 meters, Ingebrigtsen opted not to compete in the 1,500 meters at the championship. Known for his past dominance in both events, his Achilles issues had impacted his performance in the previous world championships. This latest victory further solidified Ingebrigtsen’s status as the most successful male athlete in European championship history.
In other events at the championships, Amy Hunt of Britain clinched the women’s 100-meter title with a time of 11 seconds, narrowly beating her competitors. Meanwhile, Jessica Schilder of the Netherlands secured her third consecutive gold in shot put, showcasing her resilience and dominance in the field.
