Israeli airstrikes in southern Lebanon resulted in the death of at least 11 individuals on Saturday, marking some of the most fatal attacks since a fragile ceasefire was established between Israel and Hezbollah in June. The strikes targeted a home in the village of Ansar, claiming the lives of seven people, including three children, and injuring two others. Additionally, an airstrike in the village of Deir al-Zahrani led to the death of four individuals and left 17 wounded.
A “framework agreement” was reached on June 26 between Israel and the Lebanese government, outlining a plan for Israeli troops to withdraw from southern Lebanon in exchange for Hezbollah’s disarmament. Despite efforts for peace, Hezbollah, backed by Iran, has declined direct negotiations and was not part of the agreement.
Israeli Prime Minister Nawaf Salam criticized the airstrikes, stating that they instill fear among residents and hinder stability in the region. He emphasized that civilian casualties are unacceptable and that addressing military threats is the responsibility of the Lebanese government.
The ongoing conflict has seen intense Israeli airstrikes targeting strategic locations, including the Ali Taher hill. Israel’s military actions are in response to perceived threats from Hezbollah, with a commitment to protecting Israeli civilians and soldiers. Hezbollah, in turn, condemned the aggression and urged the Lebanese government to prioritize halting attacks over engaging in talks with Israel.
Recent incidents, such as the killing of two Israeli soldiers in southern Lebanon, have heightened tensions between the two sides. Despite several rounds of negotiations, challenges persist due to Hezbollah’s refusal to disarm and concerns over Israeli withdrawal from Lebanese territories.
