“La Tomatina: Thousands Unleash Red Chaos in Spain”

Published:

Thousands of individuals gathered in Buñol for the yearly La Tomatina food fight, drenching the small Spanish town in red using about 165 tonnes of overripe tomatoes. The chaotic event lasted for over an hour in the vicinity of València, where structures were shielded with tarps in anticipation of the festivities. This tradition, which dates back to a food skirmish in 1945, saw more than 20,000 participants this year, with 40% of attendees in the last three years being international tourists. Attendees not from the area paid 15 euros for entry, with the primary safety guideline being to crush tomatoes before throwing them to prevent harm. Many participants opted to wear protective gear such as swimming goggles and earplugs.
