“Life Sentence for Man Who Fatally Stabbed Girlfriend 26 Times”

Published:

A man has been sentenced to life in prison for fatally stabbing his girlfriend at least 26 times in a secluded house on a Scottish island. Aren Pearson, 41, was found guilty of murdering Claire Leveque, 24, in the Sandness area of Shetland on February 11, 2024. The High Court in Edinburgh heard that Claire was discovered in a hot tub at Pearson’s mother’s residence with multiple stab wounds, including 19 to her face and neck.

The couple, originally from Canada, had relocated to Scotland in 2023. Pearson’s brutal attack culminated from a series of domestic abuse incidents against Claire, whom he professed to “love.”

After the assault, Pearson confessed multiple times to emergency services and medical personnel about inflicting fatal injuries on Claire. Despite his admissions, he falsely claimed during the trial that Claire had self-inflicted the wounds, causing anguish to her family members who had traveled from North America to hear the distressing details of her injuries.

Following a trial at the High Court in Edinburgh, Pearson was convicted of murder and assault. He received a life sentence with a minimum term of 25 years in prison.

During the proceedings, a 999 call made by Pearson’s mother, Hazel, was played to the jury, revealing the extent of the violent altercation. Hazel reported the incident to emergency services after Pearson confessed to her about killing Claire. In the call, Pearson admitted to the crime and detailed the violent actions he had taken.

Prosecutors presented an audio recording during the trial where Claire accused Pearson of assaulting her. Pearson responded callously, indicating his violent tendencies towards her. The recording captured Claire expressing fear for her life.

Prior to sentencing, Pearson’s defense counsel acknowledged the gravity of the situation but offered no further mitigation. The judge handed down the life imprisonment sentence to Pearson.

In response to the verdict, law enforcement officials emphasized the severity of Pearson’s actions and the toxic relationship dynamics that led to Claire’s tragic death. They expressed hope that the ruling would provide some closure to Claire’s family and highlighted the importance of combating violence against women and girls in the community.

Claire’s cousin, Hope Ingram, paid tribute to her, remembering her as a vibrant and lively individual who cherished life. Ms. Ingram expressed relief that the family could now focus on honoring Claire’s memory and living life to the fullest.
