A suspect in the Madeleine McCann case, Christian Brueckner, indirectly revealed potential relocation plans in a brief GoFundMe plea. Brueckner, a convicted rapist, sought financial assistance to depart from Germany. Despite the fundraiser being swiftly removed after three hours, he managed to secure €100 (£87.92) in donations.
In his now-deleted appeal, Brueckner detailed his reasons for seeking funds and disclosed his desire to depart Germany for a country lacking an extradition agreement with the Federal Criminal Police Office. This strategic move would potentially shield him from being sent back to Germany due to political or economic tensions between nations.
Expressing his aspirations on GoFundMe, Brueckner emphasized the opportunity to depart Germany legally to escape ongoing suspicion, preconceptions, and intense scrutiny. He underscored the need for financial support, suggesting a donation of €50 (£49.96) could aid in relocating to a country where his whereabouts were not already on record with the public prosecutor’s office in Braunscweig.
Although Brueckner did not specify his intended destination, his legal counsel previously hinted at potential relocation to a non-extradition country like Suriname in South America. Brueckner, who previously served time for assaulting an American pensioner in Portugal, where Madeleine disappeared, hoped community contributions would facilitate his departure.
A court ruling mandated Brueckner to wear an electronic monitoring device for the next five years, limiting his movements within the European Union. However, the device would be ineffective outside the EU unless cooperation from another country was secured. His lawyer suggested seeking refuge in a state that does not extradite to Europe or the UK, citing Suriname as a plausible option.
With proficiency in English and Portuguese, Brueckner sought a jurisdiction free from extradition threats. Countries without extradition treaties to the UK, such as the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Cuba, and Vietnam, were considered, along with nations like the Maldives, Montenegro, Indonesia, and Morocco, which lack such agreements with Germany. Nonetheless, Brueckner’s ultimate relocation remains uncertain.
