“Man Charged with Attempted Murder and Weapons Offenses in Annapolis Valley”

Published:

An individual from the Annapolis Valley has been charged with attempted murder and multiple weapons offenses following a shooting incident involving a woman known to the suspect, who sustained severe injuries and was urgently taken to the hospital. The accused, Ryan Alexander Cole, aged 36, appeared briefly in Nova Scotia Provincial Court on Monday and his case was adjourned until August 25, while he remains in custody.

The incident unfolded on a Saturday morning in South Farmington in the Annapolis Valley when law enforcement responded to reports of a shooting. The suspect fled the scene in a damaged Mazda sedan, reportedly heading towards Halifax. Police pursued the vehicle and attempted to halt it by using a spike belt on the highway, although the suspect evaded the deflation device. Subsequently, authorities tracked the suspect from the air.

The Mazda eventually came to a halt after colliding with a tree as the suspect tried to navigate a hiking trail behind a shopping center in Bedford, a suburb of Halifax. The suspect then absconded on foot, prompting the RCMP to issue an initial alert. Concerns for public safety emerged due to the suspicion of the suspect carrying a firearm, leading to a localized alert in the Bedford area. When it was evident that the suspect had not been located and could have moved further within the vicinity, an emergency alert was issued to all residents in HRM.

Law enforcement agencies, including police dog units from the RCMP and Halifax Regional Police, as well as emergency response teams, were involved in the apprehension. While confirming a connection between Cole and the victim, authorities could not specify the exact nature of their relationship. Cole has a substantial criminal record dating back to 2008, comprising various charges such as breaching conditions of previous releases, disarming a police officer, resisting an officer, and unauthorized sharing of intimate images.
