McDonald’s enthusiasts are expressing discontent following a widely shared post on social media that revealed the soaring price of a hash brown, reaching nearly £2 at select restaurants.
The viral post featured an image of a McDonald’s menu board displaying the price of a hash brown as £1.99 at the specific restaurant visited by the individual.
Prompting reactions from over 459,000 viewers, the post included a remark stating, “£2 for a single hash brown. We’re calling it quits.”
Commenters chimed in, expressing astonishment at the price hike. One person remarked, “It’s getting out of hand, I rarely visit but it used to be a budget-friendly choice.” Another suggested, “For that price, you might as well get the sausage sandwich.” A third simply exclaimed, “Unbelievable.”
Adding to the conversation, another user noted, “Those hash browns are fantastic, but £2 is just too much.” While someone else reminisced, “I remember when they were only 59p.”
Responding to the uproar, a McDonald’s representative clarified, “A significant number of our restaurants are independently owned and operated, allowing franchisees to determine their pricing.”
In related developments, McDonald’s announced plans to adjust the redemption points required for free items under the MyMcDonald’s Rewards program. Currently, items like a Big Mac and Chicken Nuggets require 5,500 points, which will increase to 6,500 points starting March 17. Customers earn 100 points for every £1 spent at McDonald’s.
Furthermore, the loyalty scheme changes were attributed to escalating food and supply expenses, according to a McDonald’s spokesperson. They stated, “While the points needed for rewards have been adjusted to align with rising costs, we’ve also introduced new redemption options like Chicken Selects and Sausage Sandwiches to enhance customer choices.”
The alterations will affect the points needed for various items, such as Medium Coffees and Double Cheeseburgers, with thresholds increasing to maintain the loyalty program’s sustainability.
