A woman shared the story of her 13-stone Alaskan Malamute, which is often mistaken for a wolf but is actually a gentle giant. Amy Sharp adopted the six-foot-tall Mal when he was a puppy. Vets determined that he had a form of canine gigantism as he quickly outgrew his harnesses. At five years old, Mal stands over 6ft tall, weighs 13 stone, and wears a collar the size of a man’s waist.
Amy, 27, revealed that it costs her over £1,000 per year to feed Mal, but she has no regrets about having him as a pet. She described Mal’s growth from a small puppy with tiny paws to a massive dog that outgrew collars and harnesses regularly. Despite his diva-like behavior and specific dietary needs, including expensive kibble and supplements, Amy is happy to care for Mal.
Living in Bourne, Lincolnshire, Amy, who is 5ft 3ins tall, attracts attention when she takes Mal for walks due to his size. People often mistake Mal for a wolf, leading to curious looks and questions about who is walking whom. Amy expressed surprise at Mal’s size, as she initially expected him to weigh less than six stone.
Amy now faces challenges finding groomers willing to handle Mal’s size and sometimes needs assistance to convince him to walk home. She mentioned Mal’s stubbornness and his preference for longer walks, sometimes exceeding six miles a day. Despite his large stature, Mal is described as a gentle giant by Amy, who humorously stated that it’s Mal’s world, and they are all just living in it.
