Met Police Prepare for Far-Right Rally in London

Published:

Muslims in London are advised by the Metropolitan Police not to alter their plans despite an upcoming rally organized by far-right figure Tommy Robinson. The event, named the Unite the Kingdom march, is set to take place on Saturday, September 13, with participants gathering in Stamford Street near Waterloo Bridge before moving towards Whitehall’s southern end.

Approximately 1,000 officers will be deployed in London to ensure public safety and prevent potential conflicts during the event. Robinson, promoting the rally as the UK’s largest free speech festival, anticipates a significant turnout with controversial speakers like Jordan Peterson and Katie Hopkins scheduled to appear.

Amid concerns within the Muslim community regarding the rally, Commander Clair Haynes assured that London’s Muslim residents should feel secure while moving around the city. The police emphasize that everyone has the right to feel safe in London, and officers will be present to maintain order and address any concerns during the event.

In response to the Unite the Kingdom march, a counter-protest called the March Against Fascism, organized by Stand Up To Racism (SUTR), will commence at Russell Square and proceed towards Whitehall’s northern end. The Met plans to establish barriers between the opposing groups and monitor surrounding areas to minimize potential disruptions.

With multiple events happening in the city on the same day, including Premier League football matches, the Metropolitan Police will deploy over 1,600 officers, with additional support from external forces. Ms. Haynes emphasized the need for a comprehensive policing strategy to ensure public safety during the protests and other concurrent activities.

Authorities urge all participants to be respectful and mindful of the communities they pass through, emphasizing a zero-tolerance approach towards any discriminatory behavior or hate crimes. The police have engaged with event organizers, local businesses, and community representatives to facilitate a safe and peaceful environment for all involved.
