A woman, aged 62 and a mother of 13, is facing accusations of orchestrating a deceptive plan to expand her family without her husband’s knowledge. MaryBeth Lewis is confronted with 30 criminal charges for allegedly falsifying her husband Bob Lewis’ signature and posing as him during a virtual court session to secretly pursue having two more children through surrogacy. While she has pleaded not guilty to the charges, she has confessed to the deception in a recent interview. Reflecting on her actions, she expressed frustration, stating, “This is bullcrap for what I did to get all these fricking felonies.”
Initially welcoming five daughters, now in their 30s, MaryBeth later gave birth to twin daughters shortly before turning 50. Subsequently, she and Bob welcomed another daughter three years later and twin boys in 2012, bringing their total to 10 children by the time she turned 55. Wanting to further expand their family but having exhausted their own embryos, the couple obtained donor sperm and eggs to conceive again, as reported by Mail Online. MaryBeth underwent the implantation of donor embryos, resulting in the birth of their 11th and 12th children at age 59. Their youngest child was born when MaryBeth was 62 via IVF, despite being cautioned by doctors about the risks of another pregnancy.
The situation took a deceptive turn when MaryBeth allegedly initiated an intricate surrogacy scheme to have more babies. She disclosed to the New York Times that she deceived an IVF clinic into implanting a surrogate with embryos created using donor eggs and sperm without her husband’s consent. Through elaborate tactics, including impersonating her husband during a virtual court proceeding, she managed to move forward with the plan without his knowledge.
Upon discovering the scheme, Bob reported his wife to the authorities, prompting an investigation into the family’s actions. Subsequently, a legal process ensued, during which Bob eventually agreed to be part of the parentage order but not without significant turmoil.
The couple’s 14th and 15th children were born in November 2023. However, due to the alleged fraud, the newborn twins were placed in foster care with another family. Despite being named the legal parents of the twins on October 20 following court hearings, the Lewises are still in a custody battle with the current foster family over their son and daughter.
This incident isn’t the first time MaryBeth has been accused of blindsiding Bob. In a previous instance involving the 13th child conceived via IVF, she allegedly clandestinely implanted an embryo from the same batch used for the surrogate’s babies against Bob’s wishes. MaryBeth maintains her innocence, pleading not guilty to all charges, with her court appearance scheduled for November 7.
