A Russian helicopter pilot faced a critical decision following a tragic crash that resulted in the deaths of five individuals. The incident, which occurred in Russia’s Republic of Dagestan on November 7, was captured on shocking video footage showing the helicopter attempting to land but colliding with a pier, causing damage to its tail.
Despite the tail being damaged and hanging off, the pilot attempted to fly the helicopter towards open water before it ultimately crashed into a home, claiming the lives of five senior members of a Russian defense manufacturer. The helicopter, identified as Ka-226 and carrying workers from a defense plant, had four occupants perish in the crash, while three survivors sustained serious injuries.
Newly released footage reveals the helicopter’s struggle as it clipped an earthen pier during its landing attempt, resulting in the tail snapping but remaining attached. Despite the damaged tail, the pilot lifted the helicopter back up, trying to gain altitude over the sea. However, the helicopter lost control while flying with the broken tail and eventually crashed near the shore.
Subsequently, the helicopter attempted an emergency landing on land but failed, leading to a devastating crash. The video footage ends before showing the helicopter engulfed in flames, while separate CCTV footage captured the fiery crash near the shore. Reports indicate that only three individuals survived the crash and are currently receiving intensive care.
The pilot’s decision to maneuver the helicopter towards deep water from shallow areas has sparked criticism among fellow pilots in Russia. Conflict Intelligence Team founder Ruslan Leviev suggested that the pilot’s actions, which included attempting to climb after a failed landing, seemed erratic and possibly influenced by panic or impaired judgment.
Tragically, the crash claimed the lives of four senior staff members from the Kizlyar Electromechanical Plant, known for producing equipment for military planes involved in the conflict in Ukraine. The Russian Federal Air Transport Agency described the incident as a “catastrophe,” as the Ka-226 was en route from Kizlyar to a recreational base.
