Poundland has made a recent announcement that 11 planned store closures have been postponed, following its earlier decision to shut down 68 stores as part of its restructuring. The budget retailer, which was acquired by investment firm Gordon Brothers for £1, had initially confirmed the closure of these stores. However, Poundland has now disclosed that 11 of these closures have been canceled temporarily.
Among the affected locations is Poundland’s Irvine Rivergate Centre store, which was scheduled to cease operations on September 14. Recent reports from the Mirror indicate that this particular store has reopened its doors for business. Additionally, planned closures in Brighton (London Road) and Anniesland (Great Western Road) for October have also been delayed.
In another development, a closure set for a store in Whitby has been called off after Poundland reached an agreement with the landlord responsible for the property. Poundland has reiterated its expectation that its store count will eventually decrease to approximately 650 to 700 outlets as leases expire. The retailer had started its restructuring process with 800 stores.
Despite the postponements, Poundland will proceed with the closure of six stores on September 28 in various locations, including Glasgow, Havant, Shropshire, Derbyshire, Swanley, and Uttoxeter, as originally planned. Managing director Barry Williams expressed confidence in delivering a more streamlined and customer-centric Poundland that remains committed to offering great value to shoppers.
The company is introducing a simplified pricing structure of £1, £2, and £3 across its UK stores. By the end of the month, around 60% of grocery items will be priced at £1, while 20% will be £2, and the remaining 20% will be £3. Notable additions to the £1 product lines include popular items like Fox’s Chocolatey Rounds, Cadburys Mini Fingers, Lucozade Sport, BIC Ladies Razor, and more.
Poundland has updated its website to showcase products only, eliminating the option to make online purchases. The retailer is also discontinuing its loyalty app, Poundland Perks. This app allowed customers to earn points on purchases that could be exchanged for vouchers. Existing vouchers can still be used until January 15, 2026.
