An individual passionate about football, who managed to raise more than £260,000 for charity through the sale of samosas. A mother who bravely plunged into the ocean to rescue a 10-year-old boy from drowning. Additionally, a five-year-old girl who exhibited remarkable courage in rebuilding her life after the loss of both her legs.
These are just a few examples of the inspiring recipients celebrated at the 2024 Pride of Britain Awards. Selected from a vast number of public nominations, these everyday heroes were acknowledged at an elegant ceremony in London, co-hosted by Ashley Banjo and Carol Vorderman.
Furthermore, a remarkable surprise awaited the winners. P&O Cruises, the new primary partner for the Pride of Britain Awards, generously provided each of the 12 recipients with a cruise holiday – an opportunity to enjoy a splendid and unforgettable trip with their families.
We had the chance to speak with three heroes who embarked on a 14-night Caribbean expedition aboard Britannia, visiting eight picturesque islands and indulging in top-tier entertainment.
Aiyla Mota, Child of Courage
Before turning four, Aiyla Mota fell ill with what initially seemed like a typical childhood infection. Unfortunately, it developed into sepsis, leading to multiple organ failure. To save her life, doctors had to amputate both her legs and five fingers.
Now at the age of five, Aiyla has displayed extraordinary resilience. Her bravery and optimism have astounded those around her, resulting in her earning a Pride of Britain Award and becoming one of the youngest recipients ever.
Her mother, Eulanda, aged 28 and hailing from Middlesex, expresses, “Aiyla has always exuded a lively personality, and despite her challenges, she has not lost that spark. In fact, she is now even more spirited, confident, and vivacious. She’s like Aiyla multiplied by 100!”
“My grandmother believes she recognizes that she has been given a second chance at life and is making the most of it.”
Following the presentation of her award by P&O Cruises, Aiyla and her family journeyed to the Caribbean, accompanied by Aiyla’s grandmother, Trisha, and Eulanda’s partner, Louis. They relished exploring Britannia’s 27 restaurants and bars, eight live entertainment venues, and four swimming pools.
“The cruise was an amazing holiday, and I am immensely thankful to P&O Cruises for this incredible opportunity,” Eulanda remarks. “It was our first cruise experience, and we were unsure of what to expect.
“One surprising aspect was that at times, you forgot you were on a ship due to the abundance of activities available.
“Aiyla particularly enjoyed the kids’ club, the entertainment, and staying up late! During our island visits, she relished the beaches and a rainforest excursion.
“Personally, the visit to Barbados was deeply meaningful. My father and grandparents originated from Barbados, but I had never been there. Stepping onto its shores, I felt incredibly blessed to be there and to connect with my family’s roots. It was a profound experience for me.”
Emily Greenwood, Outstanding Bravery
Emily Greenwood was enjoying a winter stroll along a Cornish beach with her disabled son, Isaac, when a sudden crisis unfolded before them.
A 10-year-old boy surfing on a bodyboard became caught in a riptide, swiftly pulled out to sea. Amidst panic, his mother watched as her partner attempted to assist but was also dragged into the treacherous current.
Without hesitation, Emily, a 53-year-old mother of three, secured Isaac’s wheelchair in a safe spot on Holywell Bay’s shore before plunging into the frigid water. Braving icy temperatures and formidable waves, she swam 400 meters to reach the imperiled individuals.
“The boy kept crying out, ‘We’re going to die,’” recalls Emily. “I instructed them, ‘Stay calm and follow my lead.’”
Utilizing the bodyboard as a flotation aid, she guided them back to safety, propelled by sheer determination.
