Rapist and killer Brian David Steckel maintained his composure and coherence for several minutes, even after receiving a lethal injection. The 36-year-old American, found guilty of the brutal rape and murder of 29-year-old Sandra Lee Long, spent his final moments conversing calmly with family and onlookers while the deadly drugs circulated through his system.
Witnesses to the execution reported hearing distinct sounds from the injection apparatus and observed involuntary movements, suggesting a possible failure of the drugs to act as intended. Despite this, Delaware officials asserted that the procedure proceeded as planned, attributing the extended duration to Steckel’s final statements.
In his parting words, Steckel expressed regret and acknowledgment, stating, “I entered without resistance, and I embrace my punishment. It’s time to depart. I care for you all… I am at peace.” Steckel’s conviction stemmed from the tragic 1994 rape and murder of Sandra Lee Long in Wilmington, Delaware.
In a harrowing sequence of events, Steckel enticed Long to her apartment under false pretenses, only to assault her when she rebuffed his advances. Following the sexual assault, he set her and the room ablaze, leading to Long’s death from smoke inhalation and severe burns covering a significant portion of her body.
After the heinous act, Steckel’s disturbing conduct persisted as he adopted the moniker “Driftwood Killer,” menacing potential victims and the local press with threatening phone calls. His arrest ensued while intoxicated on an existing harassment warrant, with Steckel confessing to the crime the subsequent morning.
