Calls have emerged to change the name of a street known as Prince Andrew Avenue in Australia due to the recent controversy involving the individual. Residents residing on this street in north Melbourne are exploring options to replace the disgraced Royal’s namesake.
Similar sentiments have been expressed in various UK towns like Maidenhead, Berks, and Broadstairs, Kent for comparable changes. The local Whittlesea City Council in Australia disclosed that some residents have shown interest in altering the street’s name following Andrew Mountbatten Windsor’s fall from grace.
The monarch recently revoked his brother Andrew’s titles and ousted him from his royal estate due to his association with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Despite the allegations surrounding his involvement with Epstein, Andrew has consistently denied any wrongdoing related to improper conduct with minors connected to Epstein.
Michael Labrador, a local council member, supported the idea of a name change. “In my opinion, if an individual has tarnished their reputation and lost their title, it is inappropriate to commemorate them with a street name,” he expressed.
Tony George, a resident of Prince Andrew Avenue, expressed acceptance of a potential renaming. “If it needs to be done, then it should be done,” he remarked. “I had anticipated this development.”
A spokesperson from Whittlesea Council mentioned that they had consulted Geographic Names Victoria (GNV) regarding the process of changing the street’s name, which necessitates support from a majority of affected residents.
According to naming regulations in Victoria, street names are intended to be lasting and should only be altered under essential circumstances.
“If there is clear backing from the street’s residents for a name alteration, the council will engage in a formal consultation process and, if deemed appropriate, submit a renaming proposal to GNV for evaluation,” stated a spokesperson from Whittlesea.
“The council is currently in communication with residents who have expressed interest in a name change to discuss the next steps. At present, the formal renaming procedure has not commenced.” Recently, a US congressman alleged that Jeffrey Epstein might have arranged for additional women to meet Andrew Mountbatten Windsor and Virginia Giuffre.
