A tragic incident unfolded today as a helicopter carrying officials from a Russian defense plant crashed in flames onto a private house, resulting in four individuals onboard losing their lives due to burns. Three survivors were promptly rescued from the damaged Ka-226 aircraft and taken to a hospital in Russia, with reports indicating that one of them is in critical condition. The helicopter was transporting senior personnel from Kizlyar Electromechanical Plant, which has faced sanctions related to the conflict in Ukraine. This plant specializes in producing ground control systems, diagnostic equipment, and components for Sukhoi and MiG attack aircraft.
The exact cause of the crash, described as a “catastrophe” by the Russian Federal Air Transport Agency, remains unknown. The tragic event occurred in the village of Achi-Su in Dagestan, where eyewitnesses reported seeing the helicopter engulfed in flames while circling the sky, seemingly searching for a safe emergency landing spot before ultimately crashing uncontrollably onto a residential property.
Fortunately, there were no casualties reported on the ground, although the aircraft fell and ignited in flames near the Zhemchuzhina recreation center, situated in close proximity to the Caspian Sea. Initially, there were speculations that the helicopter was a tourist aircraft, but this was later refuted, clarifying that it was carrying employees from the defense plant. Israfil Israfilov, the head of the Dagestan Regional Control Center, stated, “It was not a tourist helicopter. There were no tourists on board. Yes, there are fatalities and injuries. The circumstances are being investigated.”

The ill-fated flight was en route from Kizlyar to Izberbash on the Caspian Sea when the tragic incident occurred. Witness accounts revealed that the helicopter’s tail wing may have grazed a pier during an attempted landing, causing it to briefly ascend before spiraling out of control and crashing near a beachside residence. One witness described the sequence of events, mentioning, “The helicopter was flying over the shore and tried to land on the pier but hit it with its tail. After that, it lifted off and started spinning. When it fell, I heard a bang and an explosion from a distance.”
