“Study Shows Walking, Cycling, Swimming Best for Arthritis”

Recent research indicates that walking, cycling, and swimming are the most effective physical activities for managing arthritis. A study that analyzed 217 clinical trials highlighted the significance of these exercises in addressing the painful symptoms associated with arthritis.

Osteoarthritis affects approximately ten million individuals in the UK, with 5.4 million experiencing it in the knee, and a majority of sufferers being women. The condition arises when the protective cartilage on bone ends deteriorates, leading to pain, swelling, and restricted movement.

A team of researchers, including experts from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in the US, conducted an extensive analysis of studies published between 1990 and 2024, involving 15,684 participants. Their goal was to determine the most beneficial exercises for managing arthritis.

According to the research paper authored by Lei Yan from Johns Hopkins University, exercise plays a crucial role in alleviating pain and enhancing the quality of life for individuals with knee osteoarthritis. Therapeutic exercise aims to enhance lower limb muscle mass, neuromotor control, and joint flexibility.

Key findings from the study revealed that aerobic exercises like cycling, swimming, and walking consistently demonstrated the highest effectiveness in addressing knee pain, improving function, gait performance, and overall quality of life over short, mid, and long-term durations.

The research compared various forms of exercise, including aerobic, flexibility, strengthening, mind-body, neuromotor, and mixed exercises. Aerobic exercises were particularly beneficial in reducing pain and improving overall function and quality of life, while mind-body exercises like yoga and tai chi showed significant short-term functional improvements.

Neuromotor exercises such as squats and lunges resulted in enhanced short-term gait performance, and strengthening and mixed exercises showed substantial improvements in knee function in the medium term.

These research findings were published in the British Medical Journal, emphasizing the importance of exercise in managing arthritis. Lei Yan, a doctoral student, highlighted the global impact of osteoarthritis, especially in older individuals, underscoring the need for effective strategies to address this prevalent joint disease.
