“Sun breaks through clouds as Trump concludes state visit”

Published:

The sun emerged as Marine One departed from the grounds of Chequers, signaling the end of Donald Trump’s second state visit. Throughout the day, the sky had been overcast, causing Downing Street aides to anxiously monitor the weather to determine if the Red Devils parachute display would proceed. Fortunately, the anticipated rain never materialized, despite earlier concerns that led to relocating a planned outdoor press briefing indoors.

Upon my early arrival at Chequers, the Prime Minister’s historic country residence, I had the opportunity to enjoy a delicious herby chicken sandwich provided by our hosts. Latecomers had to settle for a vegan salad featuring chickpeas and hummus. The initial glimpse of Trump was from a distance, observing the Red Devils’ aerial performance alongside Melania, Keir, and Lady Starmer.

Subsequently, around 60 reporters from the US and UK press were ushered into a grand chamber adorned with oil paintings. Members of Trump’s administration, known for their notoriety, mingled with the UK press corps, causing some confusion when they applauded at the start and end of the event, a custom not typically observed by journalists.

Despite a few tense moments, including Trump’s denial of knowing Peter Mandelson and a lengthy discourse on Biden’s use of an autopen, the press conference and the overall state visit unfolded without major incidents. Given recent events, it was a surprisingly smooth conclusion, particularly considering Keir Starmer’s recent run of bad luck.
