Fossilized eggshells from some of the largest dinosaurs discovered were unearthed in a surprisingly cooler region, far from the equator. Despite their immense size, these titanosaurs did not rely on brooding to keep their volleyball-sized eggs warm.
A recent study conducted by University of Calgary paleontologist Darla Zelenitsky and researchers from Japan and Argentina examined the microscopic structure of the eggshells to unravel the incubation methods of titanosaurs. The findings suggest that titanosaurs likely utilized a technique similar to modern crocodiles, burying their eggs in warm piles of decomposing vegetation to maintain the necessary temperature for hatching.
Titanosaurs, massive plant-eating dinosaurs with long necks and tails, weighing up to 75 tonnes, inhabited the earth during the Late Cretaceous period. Previous discoveries linked volleyball-sized fossil eggs, known as Fusioolithus, to titanosaurs in warmer climates. However, recent findings in the Chorrillo Formation in Argentina uncovered fragments of Fusioolithus eggshells dating back 72 to 66 million years ago, suggesting a thriving ecosystem where various dinosaur species coexisted.
The study revealed a unique incubation strategy adopted by titanosaurs to ensure the survival of their offspring in diverse environments. By adapting methods akin to modern-day reptiles and birds, the titanosaurs displayed remarkable versatility in their nesting behaviors. The research sheds light on the evolutionary adaptations of dinosaurs, showcasing their ability to thrive in challenging environments and reproduce successfully.
