Top Snooker Players Call for Overhaul of ‘Miss’ Rule

Published:

Several prominent snooker players, including Ronnie O’Sullivan, Shaun Murphy, Kyren Wilson, and Mark Selby, have shared their thoughts on a rule change they believe is necessary in the sport. During an interview with TNT Sports, these top players were asked about the one modification they would like to see in snooker rules, and a particular regulation was consistently highlighted.

Renowned seven-time world champion O’Sullivan, along with other players, has advocated for a review of the contentious ‘miss’ rule, which has been a source of frustration for top players. Under the current rule, if a player fails to make contact with the designated ball while attempting to strike it, the referee may call a foul and a miss.

A ‘miss’ is typically called when the referee perceives that a player chose a more challenging shot instead of an easier one to escape a snooker. It can also be enforced if a player underperforms and misses a ball, indicating a lack of effort.

Upon a ‘foul and a miss’ being declared, the opponent of the offending player can choose to reset the balls for a retake or leave them as is on the table. If repeated ‘foul and miss’ calls persist, the player may find themselves continuously attempting the same shot while their opponent accumulates points without needing to play a shot.

In contrast, the ‘three-miss rule’ dictates that a player who fails to hit the correct ball three times in succession automatically forfeits the frame to their opponent. This rule has been a subject of debate within the sport, with critics arguing that it can lead to inconsistent enforcement, prolong games, and confuse casual viewers.

When asked about potential game changes, O’Sullivan promptly singled out the miss rule, stating, “The miss rule.” Wilson supported this view, suggesting a limit of no more than three misses.

Selby also weighed in on the issue, proposing a restriction where a player can only miss three times before conceding. He highlighted instances where a player could be ahead by points, place an opponent in a difficult position, and win due to the opponent’s multiple misses.

Former world champion Murphy expressed concerns about how the miss rule could be exploited, emphasizing the need for a review. He critiqued the allowance for players to execute deliberate fouls under the current rule.

Additionally, current world number three Neil Robertson recommended a potential change, suggesting that failing to make contact with a red ball directly should result in a free ball for the opponent, aiming to expedite gameplay.

However, the miss rule modifications weren’t the only suggestions from top snooker players, as the traditional dress code of the sport also came under scrutiny. Many players believe that the requirement for long-sleeved shirts, waistcoats, and formal footwear should be relaxed.

When asked the same question as his peers, Mark Allen highlighted the dress code as an area needing relaxation. Luca Brecel echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the dress code, shot clock, and the requirement to always hit a cushion as key areas for potential change.
