Published:

Jamila Afelom recounted how she identified her daughter, Fatin Ben Homar Azizi’s body solely by a necklace she had given her before she embarked on a perilous journey to swim from Morocco to the Spanish enclave of Ceuta. Afelom discovered her daughter’s body in a hospital a day and a half after the failed attempt. Describing Fatin as bold, determined, and somewhat tomboyish, Afelom shared memories of her daughter’s passion for soccer, a sport that held a special place in Fatin’s heart.

Fatin’s soccer coach, Adel El Kaab, expressed his fondness for her, highlighting the challenging economic circumstances many young female players face. Despite his warnings about the risks associated with irregular migration routes, several of his players, including Fatin, pursued dreams of a better life in Europe. Tragically, Fatin’s journey ended in tragedy as she lost her life attempting to cross into Ceuta.

Afelom, a single mother struggling to make ends meet, tried to dissuade Fatin from seeking a new life in Europe. However, determined to escape poverty, Fatin made the fateful decision to pursue the dangerous crossing. With dreams of a brighter future, Fatin and her companions faced the harsh realities of migration, leading to a heartbreaking end for Fatin.

The aftermath of Fatin’s death shed light on the perils faced by migrants seeking a better life in Europe. The Moroccan human rights organization reported a significant number of deaths among those attempting the treacherous journey to Ceuta. The loss of Fatin and others underscored the urgent need for proper identification and dignified burials for the victims.

As Afelom mourned her daughter’s untimely death, she also worried about her surviving children, including her daughter stranded in Ceuta. The plight of minors left in Ceuta highlighted the ongoing humanitarian challenges faced by migrants, especially vulnerable children caught in the midst of a tumultuous journey for a chance at a better life.

Despite the heartbreaking outcome, Fatin’s family and community remember her as a spirited young woman with dreams of overcoming poverty and finding a brighter future. The tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the dangers and hardships faced by migrants seeking hope and opportunity in distant lands.
