“Trump’s Return Sparks Global Concern Over Resurgence of Torture”

Published:

In the current era, it is concerning to witness a resurgence of torture practices. Authoritarian regimes are cracking down on opposition, stifling activists, and causing harm to individuals. The reemergence of Donald Trump in the White House, a proponent of torture tactics, adds to this alarming trend.

Having experienced torture firsthand, I understand the gravity behind such statements. These words not only pose a direct threat but also set a dangerous precedent. By disregarding the global prohibition on torture, a US President inadvertently sanctions oppressive actions by regimes worldwide.

For survivors like myself, this situation highlights the neglect of our suffering, while those still vulnerable face the chilling prospect of being overlooked by the international community. Trump’s return coincides with the 40th anniversary of the United Nations Convention against Torture, a significant treaty unequivocally condemning all forms of torture as unlawful.

At organizations like Freedom from Torture, the profound and enduring impact of torture on individuals is evident every day. Survivors bear deep emotional scars, with recovery requiring specialized assistance, yet the trauma lingers indefinitely. Therefore, any normalization of torture, whether in the US or the UK, must be vehemently opposed.

The influence wielded by the US President holds global implications, influencing human rights standards worldwide. Regrettably, recent actions, such as undermining the International Criminal Court and undermining the torture ban, under the Trump administration have emboldened authoritarian leaders to act with impunity, jeopardizing global security.

The UK must not remain silent in the face of such threats. Upholding the absolute prohibition of torture is imperative, necessitating a reevaluation of domestic policies that may weaken this commitment. As a prominent advocate for human rights, the UK government must lead by example, both domestically and internationally, safeguarding the torture ban even in alliances with other nations.

Reflecting on past mistakes, such as the UK’s involvement in the CIA’s torture program post-9/11, serves as a stark reminder to avoid similar transgressions in the future. The UK now has the opportunity to showcase its commitment to human rights and international law amidst turbulent global dynamics, setting a strong precedent against any attempts to normalize torture.

Protecting human dignity at all costs is paramount, as torture inflicts irreversible harm. Together, we must remain resolute in defending these fundamental values, knowing that the eyes of the world are upon us.
