Tax justice is crucial as a recent report by Oxfam reveals that slightly more than 50 individuals in the UK possess more wealth than nearly half of the entire population combined. Millions of Britons struggle with energy, food, or housing poverty, impacting not only their lives but also hindering economic growth by increasing social security, policing, and NHS expenses.
The disparity in wealth distribution is evident in our tax system, which favors those who generate income from investments over those who earn through labor. Equalizing income tax and capital gains tax rates could generate approximately £12 billion annually. Implementing a modest 2% wealth tax on assets exceeding £10 million, affecting only 20,000 individuals, could raise an additional £26 billion per year.
Currently, the tax system disproportionately burdens the less affluent while sparing the excessively wealthy. Revising tax regulations to treat all income equally could address this imbalance and generate substantial revenue for various public needs, from infrastructure projects to healthcare funding. It is imperative to reform our tax system to create a fairer society that benefits everyone, regardless of their financial status.
