Wetherspoon has recently unveiled its inaugural pub in Europe, located at the Alicante airport in Spain. The establishment offers a classic English breakfast menu along with some unique twists, such as Japanese-style Katsu offerings. Despite some differences in decor and menu items, the pub aims to cater to homesick Brits with familiar favorites like traditional breakfast dishes.
Named Castell de Santa Bàrbera, the pub operates daily from 6 am to 9 pm, providing nearly 1,000 square feet of customer space and an outdoor terrace for seating. Wetherspoon’s founder, Tim Martin, expressed enthusiasm for the new venture, hinting at potential future overseas expansions, including airport locations.
The pub’s menu features a variety of dishes, including sausages, chips, beans, burgers, and local specialties like garlic prawns and Spanish omelette. In terms of beverages, patrons can enjoy a selection of beers, including Amstel, Stella Artois, Guinness, and BrewDog Punk IPA, as well as cocktails like the Godfather and Woo Woo.
The Alicante pub is strategically positioned to attract the millions of British tourists who visit the Costa Blanca annually, facilitated by direct flights from major airlines. Wetherspoon’s entry into the airport market signals a significant expansion plan, with approximately 30 pubs slated to open in the next year, creating job opportunities and enhancing the brand’s presence.
As Wetherspoon continues to explore international markets through partnerships with franchise operators, the company’s success stands out amidst challenges faced by other segments of the pub industry. The new pub in Alicante, managed by franchise partner Lagardère Travel Retail, represents a key milestone in Wetherspoon’s growth strategy.
