A Yorkshire family constructed their own residence, later selling it to fund global travel, experiencing a regal lifestyle while reducing living costs by half. Danielle Booth and husband Mike Booth, 36, initially entertained the idea of worldwide exploration after a 2019 French road trip with their children, Emmy Booth, 14, and Eli Booth, 10.
Inspired by their travels, Mike, a joiner, built a four-bedroom home from scratch in 2020 with plans to sell it for their journey. Following the completion of the renovation project three years later, the couple diligently saved money by selling items on Vinted and to acquaintances before selling their house in April.
Embarking on their one-way journey on October 28, they landed in Bangkok, Thailand, kickstarting their adventure. Budgeting around £500 per week from the house sale and a portion of Mike’s UK business income, they intend to travel for at least a year.
Having lived in Bradford with monthly expenses of around £4,500, Danielle, a former NHS worker, highlights the substantial cost disparity. By significantly cutting living expenses through their departure, the family aims to provide their children with a diverse cultural education.
The decision to travel also stemmed from concerns about rising crime rates and dissatisfaction with the UK schooling system. Seeking alternative learning approaches, Danielle stresses the importance of safety and independence for their daughter. Comparing the ease of living abroad to the high costs in the UK, she emphasizes the value of their unconventional choice.
While continuing education and cultural experiences during their travels, the family is currently in Chiang Mai, Thailand, with plans to visit Singapore, Malaysia, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Japan. After a year, they intend to settle as a family, reflecting on the enhanced quality time spent together away from the stresses of daily life.
Despite some skepticism from others, the family embraces their newfound lifestyle, cherishing the freedom and enrichment it offers. While missing family proximity, they find contentment in their current journey, relishing the affordability and experiences abroad.
