A father left his three-month-old daughter unattended in a baby swing, leading to her suffocation as he traveled over 200 miles away for a shocking reason. Jacob Vera, 26, was entrusted with caring for his two children while their mother, Jessica Brown, was at work. Instead, Vera abandoned them, leaving the older child crying in a crib and the baby, Isabella, swaddled in a blanket and rocking in the swing upon Brown’s return.
Upon discovering that Isabella was not breathing or moving normally, Brown sought help, only to realize that Vera had left with their phone. Tragically, it was too late for the infant. Police from the Muncie Police Department in Indiana responded to the incident at the Bestway Inn on March 25, 2023, following Brown’s distress call upon finding her children unattended.
Vera confessed to authorities that he had left the children alone to travel to Illinois to avoid conflicts with Brown. Medical responders, arriving at the scene, noted signs of rigor mortis in Isabella, indicating she had passed away approximately two hours earlier. The coroner later confirmed that the cause of death was asphyxiation.
Described as a joyful and loving child, Isabella’s untimely death deeply impacted those who knew her. An obituary praised her infectious smile and warm personality, urging others to cherish their loved ones and express their affection openly.
Witnesses reported that Vera sought rides to Illinois on the day of the incident, eventually finding transportation for a fee. Vera later admitted guilt in neglecting his daughter, resulting in serious bodily harm. He awaits sentencing and could face up to nine years in prison for his actions.
