Teen Set on Fire in Horrific Attack; Faces Long Recovery

Published:

A teenager was threatened with eight words before being soaked in petrol and set on fire, resulting in severe burns to 32% of his body, including third-degree burns on his face, torso, arms, back, and legs on October 13. The victim, Jacob Thompson, 19, is undergoing treatment in a hospital following the alleged attack.

In the moments prior to the assault, Aaron Valette, 19, reportedly brandished a plastic bottle containing a clear liquid and warned Jacob by saying, “If you come any closer I’ll burn you.” Valette then proceeded to douse Jacob with the liquid before igniting him. Bystanders intervened to extinguish the flames after the incident in Coonabarabran, New South Wales, Australia.

Following the attack, Jacob was swiftly taken to a hospital for medical care. Authorities believe the incident stemmed from an ongoing dispute between two local families. Valette has been charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent and affray, while Mavis Chatfield, 45, faces an affray charge and both have been denied bail.

Jacob’s family described the incident as deeply traumatizing, stating that they have been struggling to cope with the aftermath. Despite being on life support initially, Jacob has shown some signs of improvement, although he still faces breathing difficulties. The family mentioned that Jacob is emotionally struggling but remains positive throughout his recovery journey.

Currently receiving treatment at Concord Hospital, Jacob’s family has relocated from their hometown due to safety concerns. A GoFundMe campaign has been set up to support Jacob and his family during this challenging time. The fundraiser highlighted the severity of Jacob’s injuries, the emotional toll on his loved ones, and the long road ahead for his recovery and rehabilitation in a safe environment.
