Jessica Pegula, known for her significant wealth in the tennis world, has suggested that Andy Murray may have taken on the role of Novak Djokovic’s coach out of sheer curiosity. Shortly after retiring from professional tennis in the summer of 2024, Murray surprised the tennis community by announcing his decision to coach the 24-time Grand Slam champion.
Their partnership began before the Australian Open, where Djokovic reached the semi-finals before withdrawing due to an injury. In May, it was confirmed that their collaboration had ended by mutual agreement, just six months after they had joined forces.
Discussing the matter on The Players Box podcast with fellow players Jennifer Brady, Desirae Krawczyk, and Madison Keys, Pegula, who holds a net worth of nearly £15 million and is set to inherit a £5.5 billion fortune, suggested that Murray might have been intrigued by the chance to gain insights into Djokovic’s mindset.
According to Pegula, Murray’s interest stemmed from wanting to understand Djokovic’s thought process on the court. The unique partnership between the two former rivals was also seen as an opportunity for Murray to gain a deeper understanding of Djokovic’s success.
Despite their split, Murray and Djokovic have shared their perspectives on the coaching arrangement. Murray explained that he saw coaching Djokovic as a rare opportunity that he wanted to explore, even though he was initially content being at home. Djokovic acknowledged the value of their time together but stated that they both agreed to end the partnership as they felt they had reached their limits in terms of on-court results.
