“Aldi to Open 40 New UK Stores, Invest £370M”

Published:

Aldi is set to launch 40 new stores in the UK this year, investing £370 million to expand its presence in various regions such as Southam, Hastings, and Amersham. This initiative is part of a broader £1.6 billion investment plan announced last year, aiming to achieve Aldi’s target of 1,500 stores in the UK.

Giles Hurley, the CEO of Aldi UK and Ireland, emphasized the company’s commitment to providing high-quality yet affordable groceries to all. He highlighted the importance of addressing areas currently lacking Aldi stores and reiterated the company’s mission to offer accessible, affordable food options nationwide.

Aldi’s dedication to value was recognized as it was named the UK’s most cost-effective supermarket by consumer reports for the fifth consecutive year. Additionally, Aldi’s competitive pricing was underscored by winning The Grocer’s ‘Super Grocer 33’ survey for the seventh time, reinforcing its reputation as the top choice for British shoppers.

In a move to support its workforce, Aldi announced an increase in pay rates for store employees across the UK. Starting from March 1, 2026, store assistants will earn up to £13.35 nationally and up to £14.71 within the M25, with additional service-related increments. This wage adjustment follows Aldi’s recognition as the most affordable supermarket in 2025 by consumer rights groups.

Throughout 2025, Aldi consistently outperformed other supermarkets in terms of affordability, securing the top spot in ten out of twelve months. The average price gap between Aldi and its closest competitor, Lidl, was a mere 77p for the entire year. In December, Aldi maintained its cost-efficient image by offering a list of 68 items for an average of £123.60, closely followed by Lidl at £123.70, while Asda and Tesco presented higher average costs for the same items during the month.

By prioritizing affordability and expansion, Aldi continues to solidify its position as a leading discount retailer in the UK market.
