A popular TikTok personality was abducted and publicly killed in front of her family. Mariam Cissé, known for her nearly 100,000 followers on the social media platform, regularly shared content depicting life in her hometown of Tonka in the northern Timbuktu region.
Despite her public support for the military and often featuring in their uniform in her videos, Mariam’s content maintained a light-hearted and comedic tone, addressing the challenges of living in a volatile environment.
Reportedly in her twenties, Mariam was seized by a jihadist group while live streaming from a nearby town on Thursday, November 6. Her brother revealed to the AFP news agency that she was accused of aiding the Malian army by disclosing the jihadists’ movements. Tragically, Mariam was transported to Tonka by motorcycle over the weekend and fatally shot in the town’s Independence Square as her brother looked on.
According to a confidential security source, Mariam was targeted for allegedly filming the jihadists on behalf of the Malian army, leading to her brutal assassination. This cruel act has shocked the nation, further compounded by an ongoing fuel blockade imposed by a terrorist faction. The fuel shortages, mainly affecting the capital city Bamako, have forced the closure of educational institutions, causing significant disruptions to daily life.
Mali’s landlocked geography necessitates the transportation of fuel through neighboring countries like Senegal and Ivory Coast via road. Despite the military’s assumption of power in 2021 with promises to enhance security, jihadist threats persist, with substantial regions in the north and east beyond government control, as reported by the BBC.
Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, the chairperson of the African Union commission, expressed deep concern over the escalating security crisis, condemning the terrorist groups’ actions that have led to blockades, hampered access to vital resources, and exacerbated humanitarian challenges for civilians. He also denounced the deliberate assaults on innocent individuals, resulting in unacceptable casualties and heightened instability.
