The second season of “North of North” is set to return to Ice Cove, taking viewers on a journey with Siaja (Anna Lambe), a young Inuk woman rebuilding her life post a highly publicized split from her husband. The show, a collaboration by APTN, CBC, and Netflix, gained worldwide acclaim in its first season, making it to Netflix’s Top 10 in 33 countries. Critics praised its blend of humor and serious themes.
Co-creator and executive producer Stacey Aglok MacDonald highlighted the show’s emotional depth, stating, “We love comedy with heart. We love to laugh, but we also love to cry.” The series garnered nine Canadian Screen Awards, including Best Comedy Series and Best Lead Performer in a Comedy for Lambe.
Looking ahead to Season 2, the storyline continues Siaja’s journey as she navigates motherhood, work, dating, and complex relationships with her mother Neevee (Maika Harper) and estranged father Alistair (Jay Ryan). Siaja’s life takes a tumultuous turn as she grapples with her mother’s revelation about an older sister, leading to profound personal exploration.
The show’s creators emphasized the importance of authenticity, with filming once again taking place in Iqaluit to capture the essence of Ice Cove. Inuit cast and crew played a crucial role in shaping the series, ensuring cultural representation and accuracy in the fashion choices.
Season 2 promises unexpected twists and new characters while delving deeper into existing characters’ lives. Co-creator Alethea Arnaquq-Baril teased, “People love the humor and heart from Season 1. We’re definitely trying to do more of that and go even bigger and crazier.”
The premiere of “North of North” Season 2 in Canada is scheduled for September 1 on APTN+, followed by a broader release on CBC TV, CBC Gem, and APTN TV on September 8. The global launch on Netflix will follow later in the fall, offering audiences a deeper dive into the comedic and heartfelt world of Ice Cove.
