The decision was made swiftly on Wednesday, halting the game between the Winnipeg Sea Bears and the Brampton Honey Badgers, who were tied at 6-6 early in the first quarter when the game was called off.
The league prioritized the safety of players, officials, and fans, leading to the cancellation of the initial final match. The championship will now be decided in a single game set to take place in Winnipeg on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET, broadcast on CBC-TV, CBCSports.ca, and CBC Gem.
The change in format was necessary as the best-of-three series couldn’t be completed within the scheduled timeframe. This decision aligns with the format used in previous years and aims to ensure fairness in determining the league champion.
Honey Badgers CEO Al Whitley expressed regret over the cancellation of the game, acknowledging the disappointment caused by the abrupt end. The two teams had a history this season, with Brampton winning the previous encounters against Winnipeg.
The Sea Bears and the Honey Badgers have earned their spots in the final through remarkable playoff performances. Winnipeg defied expectations by defeating strong opponents like the Saskatoon Mamba and the Vancouver Bandits, while Brampton secured victories over the Ottawa BlackJacks and the Niagara River Lions.
