Russia launched a heavy aerial assault on the Ukrainian capital Kyiv and its surrounding areas during the night, firing numerous missiles and drones, resulting in at least 16 fatalities, as per officials on Thursday. Moscow has escalated its ballistic missile attacks on Kyiv in recent months, taking advantage of Ukraine’s lack of U.S.-made Patriot air defense interceptors, the only system capable of intercepting ballistic missiles in its arsenal.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has appealed to other countries to provide more Patriot interceptors, but global stockpiles are low due to ongoing conflicts and Ukraine’s prolonged battle against Russia’s invasion. The overnight Russian barrage included cruise missiles and high-speed jet-powered drones, adding pressure on Ukrainian air defenses.
Explosions reverberated throughout the city, with Kyiv being the main target, although hits were reported in 28 locations across the country. Approximately 40 individuals were injured, with air raid alerts continuing until dawn. Zelenskyy described the attack as extensive, mentioning that Russia had meticulously planned it for some time, using various types of missiles and drones to inflict maximum damage on civilian infrastructure.
In response to the assault, allies and neighboring countries scrambled jets and activated defense systems. Poland deployed military aircraft and ground-based air defense systems to monitor its airspace. Romania reported the crash of an unidentified drone near its border with Ukraine. Spain’s F-18 jets, conducting air policing in Romania, were dispatched to monitor suspicious air targets near the border.
The conflict has led to increased tensions in the region, with Russia testing NATO’s resolve and violating the sovereignty of neighboring states. Ukraine’s quest for missile defense systems faces challenges, with a significant decline in U.S. Patriot inventory. Lockheed Martin aims to boost interceptor production capacity to address the shortfall, but political uncertainties persist, with the U.S. considering granting Ukraine a license to produce Patriots.
During the attack, residential buildings in Kyiv were struck, causing damage and casualties. Emergency crews rescued individuals trapped under rubble, with fires breaking out in several locations. The Ukrainian military retaliated with drone strikes on Russian soil, targeting oil facilities. In response, Russia claimed to have shot down hundreds of Ukrainian drones over various regions, including annexed Crimea and the Black and Azov seas.
As the conflict continues, both sides struggle to gain the upper hand along the extensive front line, with drones playing a crucial role in the ongoing warfare.
