Larry and Deborah Dutton, a couple from Dewey, Oklahoma, who had adopted their granddaughter Heidi when she was a baby, provided a nurturing environment for her to grow up in. Living in a serene rural setting, the Duttons were well-respected in their close-knit community for their kindness and generosity.
Larry, aged 72, a retired US Air Force master staff sergeant and former airport manager, and Deborah, aged 67, also a retired Air Force member who had worked as a chef, were devoted to each other and had been married for four decades. They were active church members and frequently volunteered for local causes.
Heidi, then 17 years old, was romantically involved with Lucas Walker, 20, for a few months, leading to concerns among family and neighbors when Larry and Deborah had not been seen since before the Christmas holidays in 2022. Worried about their well-being, requests were made for a police welfare check.
Discovery of Crime
The police, responding to the concerns, visited the Duttons’ residence on January 19, 2023, where they encountered suspicious odors and signs of cleaning activities. A subsequent search with a warrant led to the discovery of a gruesome scene, suggesting foul play. Subsequently, Dutton and Walker were arrested at the property.
During the search, evidence of a botched cleanup was found, including bloodstains in the couple’s bedroom. Further investigation revealed hidden bloodied items and disturbed soil in the backyard where the bodies of Deborah and Larry Dutton were unearthed from a shallow grave.
Subsequent confessions from Dutton and Walker detailed a planned and violent attack on the elderly couple, culminating in their tragic deaths at the hands of Walker, with Dutton initially claiming involvement in the cleanup only.
Revelations and Sentencing
Walker, 22, ultimately pleaded guilty to second-degree murder charges, receiving a 35-year prison sentence, while Dutton, 19, pleaded guilty to first-degree murder, conspiracy, and desecration of corpses, resulting in a life sentence with the possibility of parole after serving 85% of a 45-year term.
