A tragic incident unfolded at Walmart in Green Acres Mall, New York, on Black Friday in 2008, leading to the death of 34-year-old Jdimytai Damour. Damour, a former customer service representative, had taken on a temporary seasonal role at the supermarket to cover expenses and save for his education.
During the early hours of the morning, a crowd of more than 2,000 zealous shoppers stormed into the store, causing chaos and stampeding over Damour. Despite efforts to help him, he tragically succumbed to the crush of the crowd. Several other employees were also injured in the commotion, with one pregnant woman among the victims.
Damour, a graduate of Freeport High School known for his passion for literature and poetry, aspired to become a teacher. His untimely demise shocked his family and community. Autopsy results confirmed that he died from asphyxiation due to the pressure on his chest during the incident.
Following the tragedy, questions were raised about the security measures in place at the store during the busy shopping event. Walmart stated they had bolstered security and collaborated with law enforcement but acknowledged the unfortunate outcome despite their precautions.
The United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 1500 called for an investigation into Damour’s death, labeling the incident as avoidable. President Bruce Both criticized the lack of safety measures and oversight, emphasizing the need for accountability and responsible management in such situations.
