Champion Boxer Ekow Essuman Overcomes Gym Challenges

Published:

Ekow Essuman has faced challenges on his journey to a world title opportunity, encountering maintenance issues at his training facility. Despite losing his British title two years ago, the welterweight fighter rebounded by defeating former champion Josh Taylor and now aims to secure a shot at a major title by defeating Jack Catterall.

The upcoming bout will take place alongside Chris Eubank Jr’s rematch with Conor Benn at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, offering Essuman a chance to compete in a safe environment after dealing with hazardous conditions in his gym. The DCT Boxing Academy in Nottingham has struggled with maintenance problems, forcing the club to invest in repairs while Essuman continued his training.

“Currently, it’s not a safe environment,” Essuman expressed, highlighting issues such as malfunctioning toilets and unreliable shower heating. Leaks in the roof have led to water puddles in the gym and on the ring canvas, posing injury risks. The gym had to undergo significant repairs, including replacing the canvas and flooring, as well as purchasing new equipment due to water damage.

While Essuman has relocated for his upcoming fight, his community outreach efforts, including anti-knife classes and youth programs, have been paused due to the gym’s conditions. Beyond his upcoming match, Essuman anticipates addressing the ongoing maintenance challenges faced by his training facility, underscoring the importance of a safe and functional environment for both athletes and the community.

Essuman’s journey reflects a pivotal moment in his career, with each fight bringing him closer to his goals while also highlighting the need for improved facilities to support his training and community work.
