“Florida Man Executed for 1988 Rape and Murder”

Published:

A Florida man, Richard Barry Randolph, aged 63, was executed on Thursday for the 1988 rape and murder of Minnie Ruth McCollum, a convenience store manager. The crime occurred when Randolph, then 27, tried to break into the safe at the store where McCollum worked. McCollum interrupted him, leading to a violent confrontation where she was brutally assaulted before succumbing to her injuries.

Randolph was convicted of multiple charges including murder, armed robbery, sexual battery, and theft in 1989. After 37 years, he was put to death by lethal injection without making a final statement. The execution proceeded smoothly according to the spokesperson for Governor DeSantis.

The incident took place in Palatka, where Randolph was caught by McCollum while attempting the robbery. He proceeded to assault, strangle, and rape her before fleeing in her car. Despite being found alive by police, McCollum passed away six days later due to severe brain injuries sustained during the attack.

Following his arrest at a Jacksonville grocery store, Randolph confessed to the crime and led investigators to evidence linked to the incident. Despite his appeals, both the Florida Supreme Court and the U.S. Supreme Court upheld his conviction, resulting in his execution.
