“Man Reunites with Missing Dog After 5 Years Apart”

Published:

A pet going missing is a nightmare for any animal lover. The uncertainty of not knowing the whereabouts of your beloved furry companion can be distressing, leading to sleepless nights and longing for their return. This was the experience of Edilson, who tirelessly searched for his dog and best friend, Abner, after the pooch disappeared in 2020.

Despite months of searching, putting up posters, and contacting shelters, Edilson eventually lost hope of finding Abner and never thought of getting another pet. However, after five years, a chance encounter on Instagram brought the pair back together.

Unbeknownst to Edilson, Abner had been living in a shelter after being rescued from the streets. Due to his mobility and vision issues, the elderly dog had become a permanent resident of the shelter and was later symbolically adopted by the project Invisíveis Não Mais (‘Invisible No More’).

The project aims to raise awareness for older, disabled, or injured cats and dogs that often get overlooked for adoption. It was during a group dog walk organized by the project that Edilson stumbled upon photos of Abner on Instagram and immediately recognized his long-lost companion.

The emotional reunion between Edilson and Abner was described as heartwarming, with Abner showing affection towards his owner. The project members highlighted the significance of reuniting families with lost pets and emphasized the importance of microchipping to facilitate such reunions.

In the UK, microchipping is mandatory for dogs and cats, ensuring that lost pets can be easily traced back to their owners. Owners can face fines for not microchipping their pets, and the process must be done by a trained professional. Keeping the microchip information updated is crucial for reuniting with a lost pet in case they go missing.
