“Sausage Stroll: 2,000 Dachshunds Gather for Global Walk”

Published:

A massive gathering of over 2,000 lively dachshunds took place at a beach for one of the largest sausage dog walks globally. The event, known as the Sausage Stroll, featured hundreds of dachshunds and their owners parading from the harbor to the pier in Southwold, Suffolk, an Edwardian resort town. Since its inception in 2017, this annual event has evolved into a prominent meet-up for dog enthusiasts worldwide. Notably, it is recognized as the largest assembly of a single dog breed in the world.

Participants and their furry companions, decked out in fancy attire, joined the stroll, with some owners sporting tomato sauce and mustard outfits while their dachshunds sported hot dog-style coats. Attendees traveled from various parts of the world, including the United States, to partake in this year’s event. The walk commenced with an organizer leading the pack in a towering 7-foot dachshund costume, and beach hut owners along the promenade provided water bowls for the thirsty pooches.

The brainchild behind this paw-some event, Laura Baggott, initiated the walk in 2017 with just 150 dogs, a number that has grown substantially each year. The record-breaking attendance of 2,238 dachshunds in 2022 marked a milestone for the event. Laura mentioned that the actual count of dachshunds this year exceeded 1,500, emphasizing the event’s charitable aspect, as participants were encouraged to donate to Dedicated to Dachshunds with IVDD, a charity supporting dachshunds with health issues.

Despite facing potential cancellation due to stringent health and safety regulations imposed by East Suffolk Council in the previous year, the event was eventually greenlit, bringing relief to the sausage dog community. The organization’s mission to assist dachshunds suffering from Intervertebral Disc Disease underscores the significance of this annual gathering in raising awareness and support for these beloved canine companions.
