A tragic incident involving fireworks in the southern Los Angeles neighborhood of Vermont Knolls has led to the death of a 17-year-old teenager. The teenager was playing with fireworks in his backyard when neighbors heard a loud explosion resembling a bomb around 9:30 pm local time on Wednesday. It is illegal to purchase, sell, or use fireworks in the city of Los Angeles, and it is suspected that the fireworks involved may have been homemade.
Emergency services were called, and officers from the Los Angeles Police Department responded to the scene on the 400 block of W. 84th Street. Upon arrival, they found the teenager on fire. He was quickly taken to the hospital, where he tragically succumbed to his injuries.
According to local authorities, the fireworks possibly were homemade, and the teenager’s family was unaware of his possession or activities with the fireworks. Witnesses reported hearing a loud explosion similar to a bomb, prompting the LAPD Bomb Squad to investigate the incident.
The investigation revealed that the teenager was handling pyrotechnic materials when they exploded, leading to the discovery of a significant quantity of illegal pyrotechnic devices. These explosives were safely removed, and the police confirmed that there are no ongoing safety concerns for the public.
The City of Los Angeles has implemented a complete ban on fireworks, making it illegal to possess, sell, or use them. Community activist Najee Ali expressed concern over the availability of illegal fireworks to children in the neighborhood and emphasized the unnecessary tragedy of the teenager’s death.
Although fireworks-related deaths in the U.S. are relatively low, with 11 recorded in 2024, eight in 2023, and approximately 13-15 in 2021-2022, the number of injuries remains significantly higher, often attributed to misuse or malfunctions, as highlighted by data from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).
