“UK Government Warns of Post-Christmas Cyber Attack Risks”

Published:

The government is cautioning households about the increased risk of cyber attacks during the post-Christmas period. With the addition of new ‘smart’ devices gifted over Christmas, the number of internet-connected devices in UK homes continues to rise. These devices range from smart speakers and fitness trackers to security cameras, as well as modern household appliances like fridges, thermostats, kettles, washing machines, and toys.

The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) has highlighted the potential security risks posed by insecure devices, which could allow hackers to infiltrate a household’s network or launch cyber attacks. Recent data showed that connected homes face an average of 10 attacks per day, with security measures averting approximately 1,736 threats every minute.

To combat these risks, the government is urging households to take simple security measures such as setting up two-step verification on new device accounts and enabling automatic updates. Cyber Security Minister Baroness Lloyd emphasized the importance of safeguarding smart devices to ensure families can enjoy a secure and worry-free holiday season.

NCSC director for national resilience, Jonathon Ellison, advised users to prioritize setting up essential security features when configuring new smart devices. By following NCSC guidelines and activating two-step verification for critical accounts, individuals can enhance their cybersecurity measures.

The UK government asserts its leadership in safeguarding families from cyber threats, citing regulations mandating basic security standards for all smart devices sold in the country. These regulations, implemented in April last year, include requirements to eliminate default or easily guessable passwords.

In addition to these measures, the festive security checklist encourages users to stay informed and proactive in protecting their digital assets.
