I recently came back from providing essential assistance to first responders and labor representatives in the Donbas area of Ukraine. Despite facing daily power outages, missile attacks, and civilian casualties in various settings like homes, schools, hospitals, and even preschools, Ukrainians exhibit remarkable resilience. While they desire peace, they refuse to surrender their nation to Russia and endure the hardships of living under occupation.
During my visit to the Save Ukraine facility, I encountered children rescued from the occupied territories, with disturbing statistics revealing that one in ten had experienced sexual abuse. The reported abduction of over 20,000 children by Russia, likely an underestimate, signifies widespread child exploitation on a distressing scale.
In a concerning development, sanctioned Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich is impeding the transfer of £2.5 billion from the sale of Chelsea FC for Ukrainian aid while entangled in a legal dispute over frozen assets in Jersey. Notably, a member of the Conservative Shadow Cabinet is aiding Abramovich in the Jersey case, drawing criticism for enabling a sanctioned oligarch closely associated with Putin.
The involvement of Lord Wolfson KC, a Conservative peer and the Shadow Attorney General, in Abramovich’s legal battle alongside former Trump adviser Eric Herschmann, signifies a worrisome normalization of relationships with Russian oligarchs. Justifying this as a routine legal representation does little to instill confidence amid the ongoing crises in Ukraine.
The ongoing legal disputes cannot be viewed in isolation, especially as children are being abducted, civilians are perishing, and Ukraine is fighting for its survival. Across Western nations, populist and far-right leaders, including those in prominent positions like the White House, are advocating for normalization of ties with Moscow. Notably, figures like Nigel Farage have a history of echoing Kremlin narratives, underscoring the need for vigilance against such influences.
The lack of action regarding Wolfson’s collaboration with a sanctioned oligarch raises significant concerns about the Conservative Party under Kemi Badenoch’s leadership. Upholding democratic values requires holding them accountable for this unacceptable association.
It is imperative for the Labour government to respond decisively by introducing emergency legislation to prevent sanctioned oligarchs from exploiting the UK legal system and redirecting the nearly £30 billion frozen Russian assets in the UK towards aiding Ukraine. As Ukraine stands on the frontline of the democracy battle, it necessitates our unwavering support. Join us in demonstrating solidarity with Ukraine outside Tory Headquarters on January 7th at 5 pm to amplify our voices for a just cause.
