Golfer Rory McIlroy has lent his name to a novel award that recognizes the top DP World Tour player in the Majors annually. However, the Masters champion himself is ineligible to win this accolade.
McIlroy, the first European to achieve the career Grand Slam by triumphing at Augusta in April, now has the Rory McIlroy Award established by the DP World Tour. This award acknowledges the tour member who demonstrates outstanding performance across all four Major Championships in a given season.
Despite his achievements, McIlroy humorously acknowledged his ineligibility, stating, “It would be cool but I am ineligible for it. I thought it would be better if I wasn’t. I think it was a decision made by all of us. We thought it was best if I would be ineligible for it.”
The DP World Tour has introduced this award in acknowledgment of McIlroy’s accomplishments on the course and his continuous support for the tour, including participating in events worldwide.
Expressing his gratitude, McIlroy remarked, “It’s a huge honour. In 2008, it was the Sir Henry Cotton Award (Rookie of the Year) I was trying to get to. Then trying to win Harry Vardon (Race to Dubai winner) trophies and Seve Ballesteros (Players’ Player of the Year) awards.”
